RAY WILKINS 1956-2018

Very saddened to hear the news of footballer Ray Wilkins passing away.

He was a proper gent and had a fabulous career.
Started at Chelsea, won the FA Cup at Manchester United, played for AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and QPR and won the League in Scotland with Rangers. And also the small matter of 84 England caps.

This has a special poignancy for me as well, for as a youngster he was my very first favourite player for Chelsea back in the mid to late 1970s.
Before the onslaught of replica football shirts, many a Mum rustled up a homemade kit for their kids, and mine made me a Ray Wilkins shirt. Making and sewing on a number 8 to the back of a long-sleeved blue shirt, so I could pretend to be Wilkins in the back garden.

I still have the original shirt.

He returned to Chelsea twice as a coach, to Gianluca Vialli and Carlo Ancelotti, where his fluent Italian and love of Chelsea combined to help the glory days return to King's Road.

He remained intelligent and articulate throughout his career and will be sorely missed.
